Paper Prison

When I was a summer intern at Interbrand New York, employees from the company’s offices around the world were challenged to create a poster commemorating Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday. The only restriction was that the poster had to be A2 size.

Among my brainstorm of sketches was an idea to create a poster that would fold out into the size of the prison cell on Robben Island, South Africa where Mandela served most of his 27-year sentence. That concept quickly consumed my time at the company. Most days were spent by the plotter printer with designer Kristin Labahn, creating mockups and figuring out how to fold down an 8 by 7 foot sheet of paper into an A2 size booklet.

While I returned to college, designers at the company turned our mockup into a polished design and submitted it to several design awards. The piece ended up winning a Cannes Lions Gold, an ADC Awards Best of Show Black Cube, and a Gold Pencil from The One Show.
